What can I expect from the initial consultation?

The initial consultation will be approximately 50-60 minutes long. Depending on the situation, we may need a follow up appointment to review treatment recommendations in depth. In this initial call I will start by asking questions to get to know you (i.e. Where did you grow up? Do you have any pets? How do you spend your time? What music do you like?). I will then transition to asking you about your medical history (current and previous physical conditions, allergies, existing medical team). The bulk of the session we will focus on your mental health history, previous treatments and experiences, and fully understanding the current picture. If relevant, I will ask to connect with your therapist or if you think it would be helpful I am happy to talk to a family or friend.

How can I prepare for the first meeting?

Make sure you are in an environment that is comfortable and private. Ensure your laptop / phone is charged. If you have had mental health treatment in the past, it would be helpful to gather details of your care including previous medication trials (names, length of trial, doses if possible) and approximate dates/timelines for important mental health events throughout your lifetime. I would also recommend spending a moment to reflect on what you are seeking support for - are there specific symptoms that bother you? What are you hoping to change or improve?

What if I want to try therapy before considering medications?

This is typically the recommended path! Many folks come to me at recommendation of their therapist or if they’ve tried therapy for a period of time and it does not feel like enough. If after our initial consultation you decide to pursue working with a therapist I will guide you in finding a therapist based on your needs. We can also talk about what a “good fit” might mean for you in terms of specific therapy modality and therapist approach.

Will I get a prescription at the end of the initial consultation?

The short answer is it depends. After our first meeting I will share treatment recommendations - depending on the person and their experiences treatment options might include further diagnostic work up, trialing therapy before considering medications, or therapy and medications. There is no pressure to take a medication if it is recommended- this choice is personal and yours to make!

What if I am already prescribed a medication and just need a refill?

It’s important to me to take a thoughtful, evidence-based approach when determining the best course of treatment for each individual. I prioritize a thorough evaluation and critical thinking to ensure that every treatment decision is well-informed and aligned with the client’s unique needs.

How long can I expect to take medication for?

The length of time you may take medication really depends on the individual. Some people find that medication helps them manage their symptoms and quality of life and choose to continue treatment for the foreseeable future. Others may feel better over time, and after a collaborative discussion of the benefits and risks, we will work together to taper their medication safely.

Do you perform ADHD evaluations?

My practice specializes in care for primarily mood and anxiety disorders, and I do not perform initial ADHD evaluations at this time. Of course, ADHD can co-occur with mood and anxiety disorders and this does not prohibit us from working together.

Measurement Based Care

There are many elements that contribute to mental wellness, and it’s often challenging to determine what’s having a positive or negative impact. Measurement-based care helps connect the dots by using objective data to identify patterns over time. These data points include standardized questionnaires, sleep duration, daily mood, and medication consistency. I partner with Lucid, an app that helps track these variables between appointments. With this additional insight, we can make more informed treatment decisions, monitor progress, and gain a clearer understanding of your experience. Participation is optional but highly encouraged - all you need to link with me is my email!
